This has been resolved with the XPR series by adding Talker Alias which allowed the Name and Callsign to be sent through the digital stream and the radio to decode that information and display it to the user. In regards to ease of use, the software is very sluggish and many features that existed in the XPR/DP series have been removed from the ION. There is no setup once the software is purchased as it comes configured from Motorola, and Motorola tech support can see and modify your codeplug at any time. The biggest downfall is that software is subscription based and requires a prepayment to Motorola in order to have programming capabilities for their radio. Programing the Ion is quite easy using “cloud programming software.” When released, I believed that this was going to be web-accessible but in fact, it is a Windows-based program that stores your codeplug data in the cloud and writes it to your radio via the radios network connection. Zones are easily set up and the display shows the Channel Name and zone clearly on the vivid display. The radio has room for 2000 contacts which is enough for most people. This is quite the blessing when listening to Amateur Radio DMR whereas on a non-balanced radio one is constantly turning the volume up and down to try and balance the audio transmissions. All audio transmissions are at the same level. Motorola’s noise balancing algorithm is very easily noticed by anyone paying attention. When turning the device on one immediately notices the amazing sound quality. The screen is bright and the colors are vivid.
